Friends of Brentwood Library Announce October Showcase and Gallery Artists

Post Date:09/27/2018

Each month, The Friends of the Brentwood Library (FOBL) host the work of local artists at the John P. Holt Brentwood Library. The exhibits remain up for the entire month, and the public is invited to view the artists’ work during library hours, free of charge. Exhibits are displayed in two areas: painting is displayed on the Gallery Wall, while the Showcase Display is for more three-dimensional work. The October Gallery artist is painter Michelle Rideout, and the October Showcase artists are jewelry designers Larry and Deborah Drake. Art is available for purchase.

October Gallery Artist: Michelle Rideout

Michelle Rideout grew up looking over the shoulder of her father and mentor, the late Tommy Thompson, as he created works of art. She studied graphic design at the University of North Alabama, but continued to enjoy painting with her father, both in studio and en plein air. She has studied with many talented artists, including Roger Dale Brown, Jason Saunders, Kevin Menck, Calvin Liang, Qiang Huang, Dawn Whitelaw, Jeremy Doss, Jim Himsworth and Erin Martin. She has worked in a variety of media, but her preference is oil. Rideout’s most recent commissioned project is a new type of creative venture for her: the cover and illustrations for a new book, “A Canine’s Memoir,” being published by Franklin author, Louise DeVito. In honor of her father, some select pieces of his work will be displayed alongside her paintings.

October Showcase Artists: Larry and Deborah Drake

Larry and Deborah Drake will be exhibiting their gemstone and filigree jewelry in the Showcase Display. They discovered their love for gemstone and silver work in 2010 while taking classes at Middle Tennessee Gem and Mineral Society, where they learned how to carve and shape rough stones and gems into beautiful cabochons. In 2011, they started teaching as well as continuing their studies in silversmithing, forging, chain maille, composite stonework, stone setting and filigree work. Larry started his career as a school teacher, but now he and Deborah create jewelry full time.
