John P. Holt Brentwood Library Opens Newly Renovated Quiet Room

BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – The next time you need a quiet, contemplative space to collect your thoughts or enjoy a new book, consider visiting the John P. Holt Brentwood Library. Earlier this year, the library unveiled its newly renovated Quiet Room, an upscale, peaceful environment designed for reading, studying, and quiet reflection.

The $80,000 project transformed the former teen area into a refined retreat featuring glass walls and doors that complement the library's existing architecture, new flooring, fresh paint, enhanced ceiling treatments, updated electrical features, an electric fireplace, and comfortable new furnishings. The project also allowed for the creation of an additional study room for library cardholders.

The Quiet Room is the latest enhancement made possible through the Holt Trust, established after the Brentwood City Commission accepted a generous $4.2 million bequest from the estate of O'Delle K. Holt in 2017. Mrs. Holt's gift, made in honor of her late husband, John P. Holt, is dedicated exclusively to enhancing the library's facilities, grounds and services beyond normal operating and capital expenditures.

Since the establishment of the Holt Trust, the Library Board, City Commission and library staff have worked together to invest these funds in projects that improve the library experience for the Brentwood community. Previous Holt-funded enhancements include upgrades to the library's wireless network, improvements to the Meeting Room/Learning Lab, new furnishings for the Children's Library, renovations to the Friends Gathering Room, and improvements to staff work areas.

"The Quiet Room represents the kind of meaningful enhancement envisioned through the Holt family's extraordinary gift," Library Director Lee Boulie said. "This beautiful new space provides patrons with a welcoming place to read, study and reflect while honoring John P. Holt's enduring legacy of service to our community."

Boulie formed a Quiet Reading Room Task Force in November, with the Library Board and the Brentwood City Commission supporting the project. The City's Facilities Maintenance Coordinator managed the construction, speeding up the process and saving Brentwood the expense of hiring a general contractor.

Planning continues for additional library enhancements, including future improvements to the Teen Space, as the City and Library Board continue implementing the long-term vision for the Holt Trust.
