The City of Brentwood has an established policy for the design and installation of speed humps on qualifying residential streets to help control speeding and discourage cut-through traffic. The HOA (Home Owners Association) for the subdivision in question, shall submit a formal written request for review of a specific location to begin the speed hump evaluation process.
Some of the minimum criteria for a speed hump include:
- Speed humps can only be located on local roadways in a subdivision that connect with major arterial or collector roads of the City.
- The roadway must be a two lane road (less than 30 feet wide and with grades less than 6.0%).
- The posted speed limit is 30 m.p.h. or less with a measurable speed problem.
- At least 2/3 of the residents living within 1,000 feet the proposed traffic calming measure must support the installation and the HOA must agree to pay 60% of the cost to construct.

The City Commission must review and approve all speed hump installations.
The City pays for all traffic counts and engineering studies necessary to evaluate the location. Once the speed humps have been completed, the City will invoice the HOA for their 60% of construction costs. Generally speed humps are only effective if used in sequence, for this to occur there would need to be enough room to install a minimum of two speed humps, typically 300-600 feet apart.

he City of Brentwood has an established policy for determining when a multi-way stop is warranted on residential streets to provide safe and efficient traffic control. Multi-way stops are not appropriate for use as a speed control device. The policy also addresses various other options for traffic calming measures on more heavily traveled residential collector streets.
Multi-way stop sign installation may be allowed if one of the following conditions is met:

The sight distance for a vehicle in a stopped position on a minor street approach (or approaches) of an intersection is less than 180 feet. The sight distance measurements shall be done in accordance with the procedures outlined in the latest edition of A Policy on Geometric Design of Highways and Streets.

A crash problem, as indicated by 3 or more reported accidents in a 12-month period that are susceptible to correction by a multi-way stop installation. Such accidents include right- and left-turn collisions as well as right-angle collisions. Rear-end, side-swipe, and run-off-the-road type accidents are not considered to be the type susceptible to correction by a multi-way stop installation.

Four-way stop sign installation may be considered at intersections of residential streets within the City of Brentwood if six (6) of the following conditions are met:
a.) The total vehicular volume entering the intersection from all approaches averages 100 veh/hr (minimum) for at least any four hours during a typical weekday.
b.) The vehicular volume entering the intersection from the minor street or streets for the same four hours averages at least 25 vehicles per hour.
c.) Both streets have residential frontage and speed limits of 30 mph or less.
d.) Neither street is listed as an arterial per policy.
e.) Neither street exceeds 38 feet in width, excluding median width.
f.) No existing stop sign or traffic signal is located on the more heavily traveled street within a distance of
1,200 feet. In cases where stop signs are currently located on the more heavily traveled street at the
subject intersection, this distance restriction shall not apply and Condition 3(f) shall be considered
satisfied.
g.) The intersection has four legs with streets extending for a minimum of 800 feet, including connecting
streets, from the intersection on at least three of the four sides.
Traffic calming measures that may be considered under the adopted policy include non-structural measures, such as pavement markings to provide narrower travel lanes or capital projects including medians and roundabouts. The details regarding when such measures may be considered are discussed in more detail within the policy.
