Water Line Flushing Program

What is line flushing?

You may have noticed at some point Water and Sewer Department crews working at fire hydrants with water gushing into the street and thought that the Department is ignoring its own philosophy of conserving water. The process of routinely flushing water lines and fire hydrants is an important, preventive maintenance activity to maintain the integrity of our water system. The flushing allows us to deliver the highest quality water possible to customers. Flushing uses water force to scour out materials that accumulate in the City’s pipes. Water pipes are usually flushed by opening fire hydrants.

Why does the city flush water lines and fire hydrants?

Flushing the water system on a routine basis removes sediment from lines and keeps the entire system “refreshed”. As a result of the line flushing process, residents in the immediate vicinity may experience temporary discoloration of water. This discoloration consists primarily of harmless silt and air and does not affect the safety of the water. If you experience discoloration in your water after crews have been flushing in your neighborhood, clear the pipes in your own home by running all water faucets for a minute or two.

What should I do if I turned on a faucet and the water is discolored?

If your water appears to be cloudy, do not be alarmed. It is recommended you do not drink, bathe or use the water for cooking or laundry for about two hours, which will give the sediment time to settle. After two hours, run cold water faucet(s) for about five minutes or until the water is clear.

How does line flushing impact me?

Flushing is generally conducted between the hours of 7:30 a.m. 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, flushing also may occur during evening and night hours, as well as weekends as needed. Usually, customers are not aware that flushing is even taking place. During a pipe flushing, businesses and residents may experience discolored water and a reduced water pressure, but overall water service should not be interrupted. You will notice wet streets in your area from the flushed mains.
