Project Description
Old Smyrna Road is a narrow, heavily traveled east-west arterial road in Brentwood, providing a key connection between Wilson Pike and Edmondson Pike. Multiple new developments are planned or currently under construction along the roadway, including the Harlan Residential Development, Ceilo Residential Development, and the Windy Hill Park near the Jones Parkway intersection. As growth in this area continues, the need for an improved road becomes increasingly important.
The western half of the Old Smyrna Road Improvement Study area (approximately ¾ of a mile in length) features an extremely narrow roadway (15 feet in total width), with large trees located just a few feet from the edge of the travel lane. Additionally, there are old stone walls and retaining walls situated close to the roadway. Along much of this segment, a roadside drainage channel lies immediately off the edge of the pavement. These conditions pose concerns for wider vehicles, such as school buses, emergency vehicles, and large trucks, traveling on this roadway.
Previous studies have provided preliminary design options for the roadway. Currently, additional work is being conducted to provide further clarity on the best design recommendations. This work will include additional design studies and meetings with the public to gather valuable feedback on various considerations. Existing historic features will be carefully considered during this process. Public meetings will likely be held in August of 2026.
