EMS Program

Brentwood Fire & Rescue is committed to delivering the highest standard of emergency medical care to the citizens and visitors of Brentwood. As part of this commitment, the department responds to all 9-1-1 calls and requests for medical assistance within city limits. Due to the strategic placement of Brentwood’s five fire stations, fire apparatus often arrive on scene ahead of the ambulance, providing rapid assessment, stabilization, and treatment of patients in critical moments.

All Brentwood firefighters are trained as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) or Paramedics, allowing the department to provide a full range of medical services. Each fire apparatus is equipped to deliver Basic Life Support (BLS), including CPR, AED use, oxygen therapy, airway management, intravenous access, trauma care, and initial cardiac treatment. In addition to BLS, Brentwood’s five engine companies, rescue company, and tower company are equipped and staffed to provide Advanced Life Support (ALS). ALS capabilities include advanced cardiac care with 12-lead EKG interpretation, medication administration, airway intubation, and other critical interventions.

The primary difference between BLS and ALS lies in the level of training, certification, and scope of practice. Brentwood Fire & Rescue currently has 37 certified Firefighter/Paramedics, and the department’s ongoing goal is to staff all seven fire apparatus with Paramedics 24/7, 365 days a year, ensuring citywide ALS coverage at all times.

The EMS Division is led by Lieutenant/Paramedic Scott Barnes, who brings over 25 years of experience to the role. Lt. Barnes began his EMS career in 1995 and earned his bachelor’s degree in Paramedicine from Central Washington University in 1997. After several years of service in the Seattle area and with Williamson Health EMS, he joined Brentwood Fire & Rescue in 2009. Lt. Barnes holds multiple instructor certifications and plays an active role in EMS training, policy development, and quality improvement initiatives across the department.

Through professional training, advanced technology, and a commitment to excellence, Brentwood Fire & Rescue’s EMS division continues to raise the bar in pre-hospital emergency care.
