Hazmat Operations
Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Response Program
Brentwood Fire & Rescue provides a comprehensive Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) Response Program designed to protect the community from chemical, biological, radiological, and other hazardous threats. The program’s mission is to deliver competent, knowledgeable, and resourceful response capabilities tailored to the specific risks present within the City of Brentwood.
Vision of the Hazmat Program
The vision of Brentwood’s Hazmat Program is to:
-
Maintain a high level of knowledge about hazardous materials and their associated risks.
-
Acquire and sustain the specialized apparatus and equipment necessary to respond to and mitigate hazardous materials emergencies in a fiscally responsible manner.
-
Train regularly for scenarios involving hazardous substances to ensure operational readiness.
-
Collaborate with citizens, businesses, and local stakeholders to reduce the likelihood of hazardous materials incidents.
-
Foster strong relationships with internal and external partners for coordinated response to large-scale or complex incidents.
Tiered Response System
Brentwood Fire & Rescue operates under a three-tier hazardous materials response model, in compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 and NFPA 470 standards:
Tier 1
Line fire and rescue personnel, trained to the operations level, manage smaller, more routine hazardous materials incidents within the city.
Tier 2
The regional Hazardous Materials Response Team (HMRT) is activated for incidents that exceed local capabilities. This team includes Hazmat Technicians from Brentwood Fire & Rescue, the Franklin Fire Department, and the Williamson County Emergency Management Agency.
Tier 3
For large-scale or highly complex incidents, Brentwood maintains mutual aid agreements with neighboring agencies and contracts with a private hazardous materials response and cleanup company. Additional support is available through the Tennessee National Guard Civil Support Team based in Nashville, which specializes in weapons of mass destruction (WMD) response and hazard identification.
Through strategic partnerships, specialized training, and a multi-layered approach, Brentwood Fire & Rescue’s Hazmat Program ensures a robust and adaptable response to hazardous materials threats within the city and the surrounding region.
